Storm impacts: Update for Whangārei District

MetService has issued weather warnings for the Whangārei District today, Tuesday 21 January 2025.

Please take extra care when travelling or doing any activities outdoors. We can expect more slips as dry ground soaks up the rain and gets heavier. 

Current road closures: 

  • Russell Road (Whakapara) - multiple issues - trees fallen and under-slips, mostly passable with 4WD but please use careful judgement and patience. Flooding may subside slowly.
  • Finlayson Brook Road - restored to 2024 condition
  • Memorial Drive - restored to 2024 condition

Partial road closures:

  • Bay View Road - lane closed for underslip, caution advised
  • Kaiikanui Road - 4WD access only, road is flooding near a blocked culvert
  • Old Parua Bay Road North - down to single lane while flooding near the start of the road
  • Russell Road (Whakapara) - multiple issues - trees fallen and under-slips, passable with 4WD, caution advised  

Fixed:

  • Crane Road - fallen tree cleared
  • Moody Avenue - drainage cleared and flooding subsided
  • Pipiwai Road North - fallen tree blocking half the road, we have a crew heading out to clear it
  • Marua Road -multiple fallen trees cleared
