District Plan

The Whangārei Operative District Plan contains objectives, policies, rules and maps to manage how and where our District develops. It seeks to balance environmental, social, cultural and economic interests to make our District a great place to live.

Our District Plan is currently subject to proposed Plan Change 1 - Natural Hazards and proposed Plan Change 2 - General Amendments.

The closedown period for processing of temporary road closure applications is from 19 December 2024 to 6 January 2025. These applications generally need to be submitted a minimum of three months before the proposed date, so please keep this and our closedown period in mind when planning your temporary road closure.

These applications generally take a minimum of four weeks to process (depending on the size of the event), so please keep this and our closedown period in mind when planning your event on council land.

Free car parking offer

The rooftop of the Central City Car Park Building (vehicle-access from John Street) will have free parking for up to 3 hours from Saturday 7 December until New Year's Eve, 31 December 2024.

Botanica Whangārei is temporarily closed for health and safety reasons. We are planning to reopen soon.

Investigating options for rating system

We are currently reviewing how rates are calculated to ensure they are still set in the fairest and most equitable way. If changes are proposed, we will seek community input through public consultation early next year. These changes will not impact the total amount of rates we collect, instead they will affect how we work out everyone’s share.

Huitau Pā walkway partial closure

Part of Huitau Pa walkway is closed due to significant erosion. You can still access the track from the parking area, however please do not walk along the cliff and make sure you stay well away from the edge as it is unsafe. Signage is in place.

Land Information Memorandum (LIM) applications closedown period

The closedown period for LIM applications is from 20 December 2024 to 10 January 2025. Any LIM application received during this time will be deemed as received on 11 January 2025. The last date to apply and pay to receive your LIM before Christmas will be Monday 9 December 2024.

Summer alcohol licence deadline: Thursday 21 November 2024

The statutory closedown period for processing alcohol licence applications is from 20 December 2024 to 15 January 2025.

To ensure your alcohol licence applications are received and processed before the closedown, we must receive them by Thursday 21 November 2024.

Christmas rubbish and recycling collections

There will be no kerbside rubbish and recycling collections on Wednesday 25 December 2024.

Collections that normally occur on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday of Christmas week will be delayed by one day. If your rubbish is normally collected on Wednesday, it will be collected on Thursday and so on for the rest of the week.

The normal collection schedule will resume on Monday 30 December 2024.

Flush water from taps in the mornings

The Ministry of Health recommends flushing a mugful of water from drinking-water taps each morning to remove any metals that may have dissolved from the plumbing fittings.
Although the health risk is small, this simple precaution is one all households on public and private water supplies should take.
