Repairs to stripped seal begin

At last, the ground has heated up enough for roading contractors to head out and repair places where chips have stripped from sealed roads.

This week, 9 to 13 December 2024, repairs will be done on Whananaki North Road, Russell Road and Kaiatea Road, followed by Ngunguru Road, Harris Road and Whareora Road.

A review of the stripped sites concluded that the underlying cause was an unexpected drop in temperatures, causing the bitumen to become brittle and making the chip susceptible to stripping.

“Resealing these sites at this time of year will ensure the remedial works are successful and provide a long-lasting result,” says Transport Projects and Procurement Lead Greg Monteith.

“Summer offers the best conditions – warm, dry weather, longer days and higher overnight temperatures, all of which help the seal and chips to bind, with the stone chips interlocking into a stable surface. We are looking forward to seeing this work completed and these problems laid to rest.”
