We provide a range of on-street parking and Pay and Display car parks for shoppers and visitors to the city centre.

Mobility parking

Mobility parking spaces are available throughout Whangārei for use by those with a Mobility Parking Permit. Parking in these spaces is free but maximum parking times still apply.

Concessions are also available for Mobility Parking Permit holders who park in standard parking spaces.

70 plus parking exemption

We provide free parking for residents aged 70 years and older at all our Council-owned car parks.

Motorcycle parking

Free, dedicated parking spaces for motorcycles and scooters are available in the city centre at:

  • James Street (midway)
  • Rathbone Street (near Robert Street)
  • Laurie Hall Park (at end of Robert Street)
  • Forum North, Rust Avenue.

Parking fees and zones

Parking in the central city is divided into three zones. There are some areas which have free parking and some time restrictions apply.

Parking charges and time limits apply from Monday to Friday, 8:00am to 6:00pm.

Parking charges and time limits also apply on Saturdays, 8:00am and 2:00pm for carparks and on-street parking within Parking Zone 1. Rules on public holidays are same as Saturdays.

Zone 1

Fee: $2.00 per hour

Time limit: 3 hours

Fees payable: Monday to Friday 8:00am to 6:00pm and Saturday 8:00am to 2:00pm

Zone 2

Fee: $1.00 per hour

Time limit: 3 hours

Fees payable: Monday to Friday 8:00am to 6:00pm

Zone 3

Fee: $2.00 per day

Time limit: Unlimited

Fees payable: Monday to Friday 8:00am to 6:00pm

There are some other areas (outside these three zones) that have free parking and some time restrictions apply.

Reserved and / or monthly concession cards and payments

A limited number of reserved and / or monthly parking concession cards are available for the Hātea East, Railway Road, Vinery Lane and Water Street car parks.

Monthly charges

The monthly charges for reserved and / or monthly concession cards are: 

  • Hātea East car park:  $43.00 per month
  • Railway Road car park:  $20.50 per month
  • Vinery Lane car park:  $43.00 per month
  • Water Street car park:  $43.00 per month

Applying for a reserved car park space

Download and save the form to your computer first. You can then either:

  • print it, complete it by hand and send or deliver it to us; or
  • fill it out on your computer and save it before attaching it to an email to us.
