Cameras on Whangārei’s network of shared paths are providing more than security for users. They are also providing proof that shared paths are escalating in popularity.

They show that cycling numbers are increasing at an average of 25 to 30 per cent each month, compared to the same month a year earlier. In June 2024, the cycling counts increased by 25 per cent to 22,012, from 17,473 in June 2023.

May is the month with the highest number of users with 26,165 in May 2024, compared to 24,095 in May 2023.

The cameras count the number of users on the paths and how they are travelling – by cycle, scooter, motor scooter, skateboard or on foot.

Starting with seven sites, three more were installed at the end of 2023 and four more are being added now, taking the total to 14.

Road Safety Promotion Project Manager Caley McGillvary says the figures are very encouraging.

“It shows that people are opting to get around actively, and are avoiding roads, which makes them healthier and safer overall. I am looking forward to seeing how much the total jumps in December 2024, compared to our first count of 12,332 in December 2022, and 19,415 in December 2023.”
