The existing wastewater pipe crossing at Waikaraka Bridge (approximately 50m west of Waikaraka Road) along Whangārei Heads Road was at risk of failure.

The poor condition of the pipe was exacerbated by a car accident that damaged the pipework and valve. 

Immediate action was required to prevent failure of the wastewater pipe, and potential wastewater discharges into the Waikaraka Stream and Whangārei Harbour.
