We asked for feedback on potential minor changes to streamline and simplify the District Plan.

The potential changes include:

  • providing greater clarity to the language and terminology within the Plan
  • ensuring consistency of terms being used throughout the Plan
  • removing duplication
  • correcting errors

The changes are not intended to make substantial changes to the overall policy direction or rules.

Below is a summary of the issues identified so far and initial thinking on how each issue could be addressed.

How do these potential changes affect me?

At this stage no changes have been formally proposed. Any new rules will not come into legal effect until they have been through the formal statutory notification and submission process.

It is also important to note that the potential changes would only apply to new projects. If your building or activity was legally established and complied with the requirements that were in place at the time it was built, and you are not proposing to change it, then you won’t need to do anything.

We asked for feedback on the issues that we have identified within the District Plan and any other minor or technical issues that you consider should be addressed. Feedback closed at 4:30pm on Friday 27 October 2023.

The Resource Management Act 1991 requires councils to ensure that the provisions within the District Plan are efficient and effective in achieving the purpose of the Resource Management Act 1991.

A General Amendments Plan Change would seek to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the Whangārei District Plan.

The feedback received during early engagement gives Council an opportunity to take these views into account before releasing any proposed changes for formal consultation.

Comments made during this feedback period are not formal submissions.
