Northland Regional Council operates a free hazardous waste collection day at Re:Sort on Kioreroa Road on scheduled collection days.

The collection days are for domestic hazardous waste, in household quantities only. Quantities should be no more than 20 litres or 20kgs at one time.

What products are classed as hazardous?

A product is considered hazardous, and must be disposed of as such, if it is:

  • flammable
  • toxic
  • explosive
  • corrosive
  • radioactive.

Household hazardous waste includes small quantities of:

  • pool chemicals
  • disinfectants
  • drain cleaners
  • acids
  • garden sprays and
  • insect baits.

Cleaning wipes or paper towels 

Rubbish bag and wheelie bin icon. Put these items into your rubbish bag or wheelie bin.  These include wipes, baby wipes and paper or paper towels used for cleaning.

Re-purpose

Use glass jars for storage of other food items or for holding small household items.  

With a little decoration, you can make home-made gifts, flower vases, candle holders or planters.    


Glass is recycled in a plant at Auckland. The glass is then mixed with other raw materials and fed into a furnace where it is melted down to make bottles and jars.

Opt for energy efficient

Next time you have to change a lightbulb, opt for a more energy efficient bulb like LED.
