Vehicle Crossing permits and approvals

The installation and maintenance of vehicle crossings (driveways) from the road edge to the property boundary is the responsibility of the property owner.

All new vehicle crossings need a permit to ensure it is designed and built to the right standard.

By doing this, we're making sure that new driveways and road access points are, safe and don't disrupt roadside drainage and nearby properties.

Existing subdivision and landuse consents

If you have an existing subdivision or land use consent where the engineering conditions require a vehicle crossing, please do not follow the application process below.

You should contact the Development Engineers for an inspection and reference your SD or LU number (e.g. SD2300000).

Download the application form, print and complete it by hand.

Step 2.Email us

Email your completed application form and supporting documents to:

Step 3.Check application

We will check your application and will contact you with any queries.  

Step 4.Pay fee

We will send you an invoice for the permit fees. 

Other applications, functions or services fees (vehicle crossing application)

You can pay the invoice either online, in person or call us with your details.  We accept Visa and Mastercard payments via our Contact Centre.

Step 5.Process application

We will forward your application onto Northland Transportation Alliance (NTA) for processing.

Step 6.Receive permit

Once processed, you will receive your permit and construction can start. 

Step 7.Schedule inspections

Prior to pouring concrete and / or laying seal, please arrange inspections with us and reference your VC number (e.g. VC230000).

If you plan to work on or excavate a road, you'll need an approved Work Access Permit and Traffic Management Plan before work can begin.

If you'd like to do any landscaping work on a roadside verge (including planting trees on verges), you'll need to have a special permit.

Advice before start

Council has four permitted areas where temporary signs for community events such as school galas, concerts, public meetings and the likes may be displayed.
