Kepa Road wastewater system improvements

The wastewater system in the Kepa Road area in Ruakākā carries wastewater from several locations to a pumping station on Sime Road.

From there, the wastewater is pumped to the Ruakākā Wastewater Treatment Plant.

Timeline of issues

In early 2023, Council’s Waste and Drainage Department was alerted to the fact that sections of this wastewater system have failed in the area. Following investigations, it was decided that the faulty parts of the gravity wastewater pipeline and faulty manholes in the area would be repaired as a matter of urgency.

Sections were repaired in stages and, by the end of 2023, stages 1, 2 and 3 had been completed.

Further evidence of faulty pipes and manholes was brought to Council’s attention in December 2023.

Planning for Stage 4 commenced shortly after this, and physical repair works started on site at the beginning of October 2024. In the interim, wastewater flow control is being managed through bypass pumping.

The public health risk is considered to be low.

What we are doing

We are:

  • replacing the faulty concrete pipeline with a polyethylene pipeline
  • installing new manholes to replace faulty ones where these are not salvageable
  • coating existing manholes where these don’t need replacing
  • keeping the area clean
  • putting up signs to alert people to the ongoing works
  • keeping a back-up pump on-site to help bypass the problem area when needed
  • monitoring flow levels in parts of the wastewater system and preventing any spills
  • updating affected parties, including NRC, DHB, and nearby property owners on progress.

Work is expected to be completed by mid to late April 2025.
