Design is underway for the John Street upgrade.

The upgrade to John Street is proposed to be a high-amenity, one-way slow-street, connecting the city centre to the waterfront.

The areas selected for the upgrade are:

  • Stage 1 – John Street (from Dent Street to Robert Street) and Robert Street (from John Street to Walton Street). This upgrade includes intersections at John and Robert streets, and Robert and Walton streets.
  • Stage 2 – John Street (from Robert Street to Cameron Street) and Cameron Street (from John Street to Walton Street). This upgrade includes the intersections at John and Cameron streets, and the intersection at Cameron and Walton streets.

The upgrade of John Street will also include improvements to how stormwater is managed in an already low-lying area. Raingarden-type solutions can help rainwater pass through filtering systems before being discharged into the conventional stormwater network.

The intention is to create clear movement with planting, outdoor dining and activity zones from Dent Street at the waterfront to Cameron Street in the city centre.

Design will be carried out over the next 12 months, with construction not scheduled until years 4 to 7 of the Long Term Plan (2027-2031).
