Whangarei District Council, in partnership with Whangārei hapū, has committed to working on a long-term strategy for the use of the Māori language through the Aotearoa Reorua programme.

In 2023, we joined the nation-wide Aotearoa Reorua programme, an initiative led by the Department of Internal Affairs with support from Te Puni Kōkiri, Te Taura Whiri i te Reo Māori and Te Mātāwai.

Aotearoa Reorua supports New Zealand towns and cities in elevating the use of the Māori language alongside the English language under the joint leadership of councils and their mana whenua partners.

By signing up to the Aotearoa Reorua programme, we are continuing to enhance relationships with mana whenua partners, while creating more spaces, places and opportunities across our District where te reo Māori can be seen, heard and celebrated.

Aotearoa Reorua enables hapū to be involved in how te reo Māori is used in our work from an early stage. Our language strategy will be organised together with our community stakeholders.

This is an exciting development for our Council, our community, and the place of the Māori language in our District.
