No new speed limits will be set in the Whangārei District until a report has come back to Council for approval in February 2025.

This follows the Government’s announcement of the new Setting of Speed Limits 2024 Rule in October 2024.

In most cases, this rule will require councils to restore, to some specific roads, the speed limits that were in force on 31 December 2019.

The new rule also says how we are to go about this and stipulates the public consultation that must take place for any new limits or changes to the previous speed limits.

This will affect many speed limits brought into communities across our District, following public consultation.

Staff are now identifying all the changes that must be made and writing up a programme of work to meet the deadlines. The new speed limits must be set by 1 May 2025 and be in effect by 1 July 2025.
