Transformation of Whangārei’s old Rose Street bus hub into a modern, clean and safe new facility will begin in the second week of January 2025.
While teams work to demolish the old buildings and shelters and rebuild the new hub, buses will come and go from Vine Street, just a few metres away.
Demolition will begin early in January 2025. Once the site is cleared, work will begin on the new public toilets, staff facilities, ticketing office and covered seating area. A new pedestrian link will also be built between Rose and Vine streets, providing a safer connection into the city centre.
Project lead Tracey Moore says this is stage 2 of a project that began in 2022, when the layout, crossings, road markings and shelters were updated in preparation for stage 2.
Rose Street bus hub upgrade – stage 2
“Waka Kotahi approved funding within the Transport Choices Package for the design (by Isthmus & Grit), with the construction contract being awarded to local contractor A-Line Construction.
“The existing bus hub fronts onto Rose Street and backs onto the Vine Street car park. It’s run-down and not fit for purpose anymore, and the pedestrian connection into the city centre (through the Vine Street car park) needs to be made clearer and safer.
“We want to see more and more people using public transport to get in and out of the city centre, and making it a better experience for passengers is a big part of that.
“Other parts of Council are also working to increase transport options into and out of the city. The Shared Path network provides connections from Onerahi, Raumanga and Te Kamo. Work is also advancing on a morning rush-hour T2 lane (for buses and vehicles carrying more than two people), which is being developed between Te Kamo and the city centre. It is due to open early next year.
“All of these projects work together to give people safe, energy-efficient and enjoyable options, without having to pay for parking at the end.”
