People paddle boarding in Whangarei Harbour in front of Te Matau a Pohe bridge.

Whangārei is home to a vibrant water sports community, benefiting from the natural coastal environment, rivers and lakes.

The Whangārei Harbour caters to a variety of sports, recreation and tourism users, with popular activities including sailing, kayaking, paddle sports, waka ama, rowing and fishing. Several clubs and organisations currently operate within the Whangārei District.

To further support these activities and groups, we are looking into the potential of establishing a central Water Sports Hub in the harbour. This could provide a central location for water sports activities, improve access, encourage sharing resources, and support the continued development of water-based sports and recreation in the District.

We want to understand:

  • the demand for a centralised hub for water sports
  • the needs and hopes of current and future users.

Have your say

We want to hear from you – from club members to casual users, tourism providers to visitors and future water sports enthusiasts.

Through our survey, please tell us how you use the harbour, where you currently do water sports activities, if you think we need a Water Sports Hub and, if so, the preferred location.

Your feedback will help decide if there is a need for a central Water Sports Hub in the Whangārei Harbour and what that could look like.

Please complete the online survey below by 5:00pm on Friday 31 January 2025.
