Whangarei Museum 40:40 Exhibition

Welcome to 40:40 from Whangārei Museum, marking 40 years on its current site at Kiwi North. 40:40 features a collection of 40 objects donated across the past 40 years and selected by 40 different people from the Northland community.

2024 signifies the 40th year of the museum in its location on the Kiwi North and Heritage Park site. Located in the Mim Ringer Gallery, the exhibition celebrates this milestone with objects that honour the people who used them in another life, who donated them to be looked after by the custodians of Whangārei Museum, and those who have connected with them in the present. The 40 exhibits that make up 40:40 include handcrafted items to everyday tools, heirlooms and artistic pieces.

“Each object carries with it a unique narrative, reflecting personal histories, cultural significance, and the evolution of the Whangārei region. The 40:40 exhibition will also include several interactives to prompt visitors to think deeper about what we love and why we love it,” says Alyce Charlesworth, Curator at Whangārei Museum. The community collaboration has been an incredible process and shows the diversity we live amongst, represented by their selections. While nothing goes together, these objects are now connected by the people that chose them.

“Ultimately, the exhibition serves as a reminder that the objects we cherish today are the artefacts of tomorrow, and by appreciating them, we contribute to a richer, more inclusive narrative of our community’s journey through time,” says Laurel Belworthy, Director at Kiwi North.

Entry to the exhibition is included in general admission to Kiwi North, free to Kiwi North Members, and runs across summer from Sunday 17 November 2024 to Sunday 16 February 2025.
