Recycling at events

It is important to ensure that we minimise waste at events.

Event organisers should have systems in place to reduce as much waste that goes to landfill throughout the duration of the event.

There are many benefits for your event including:

  • reducing its impact on the environment
  • making the event attractive to sponsors
  • help increase environmental awareness
  • meet increasing community expectation to be seen to be green
  • create goodwill amongst the team staging the event.

To minimise waste during an event, control the number of materials being used on site. Then try to cut, reuse, reduce, recycle or compost as much as possible.

To achieve this, you would need to think about the materials brought on sites. Ensuring that there are systems in place to deal with any leftover materials.

When it comes to collecting materials try and keep the flow practical. Have clear prominent signage and never overflow the bins. Provide an appropriate number of bins for the event.

Ensure that you have engaged with key stakeholders. This includes suppliers, caterers, stall holders, cleaners, recycling and waste companies. Secure their commitment to play their part in making this a minimise waste event.
