Apply for an amusement device permit

Before you operate an amusement device, you need to apply to us for an amusement device permit to operate. 

Please note that you must provide a copy of the current Certificate of Registration for each device, with your permit application.  All fees must be paid at time of application.

Amusement devices includes any fairground rides and any other mechanically powered rides used for rider entertainment. This includes but not limited to:

  • bumper boats
  • bumper cars
  • merry go rounds
  • minibikes.

Applications must be received at least 10 working days before the date of the event, or the application may be refused.

Criteria

  1. Amusement devices must be registered with NZ WorkSafe after your device has been certified by a registered engineer.

  2. The amusement device must comply with the conditions set out in the NZ WorkSafe certificate for that device.
  3. You must provide a Certificate of Registration for each device along with your completed application form. 
  4. The application must be received at least 10 working days prior to the date of the event.
  5. All appropriate fees are paid.

Step 1.Gather supporting documents

You must provide a full copy of your current NZ WorkSafe certificate for the related amusement device.

Step 3.Review application

We'll check your application is complete and that all criteria has been met. 

We will contact you to arrange payment of fees. 

Fees are $11.50 for one device and $2.30 for each additional device.

Step 4.Site inspection

Once fees are paid, we'll contact you to confirm the date and time of inspection. 

The device must comply with the conditions set out in the NZ WorkSafe certificate for that device. 

Step 5.Receive permit

The inspector will issue your permit on the day of the site inspection, if the amusement device passes the inspection.

You must not operate the amusement device until you receive the permit.

Bring your completed application and supporting documents into one of our Customer Service Centres:
