A photo of an old bridge with power lines running along the sides.

We are replacing the existing timber bridge at the end of Gillingham Road. This old timber bridge has only one traffic lane and has a weight restriction that limits development of the residential-zoned land to the north.

The Gillingham Road bridge is to be replaced with a two-lane, concrete bridge to allow for future housing in the area. It will include a shared path on one side and will be raised about 1.5m higher than the old bridge to cater for future storm flows.

The new bridge, combined with the new Springs Flat roundabout project, will enable the land to the north of the Waitaua Stream to be developed into residential housing to meet Whangārei’s housing demand.
