The Gillingham Road Bridge is located at the northern end of Gillingham Road. It is a 46-year-old, 3-span, one-lane timber bridge. The bridge is in poor condition and has the following restrictions: 70% Class I, max 7000kg axle, 30km/h speed limit. The bridge currently serves one farm and two residential houses.
The bridge is located on an old paper road that provides a connection through to State Highway 1 near Saleyards Road, Kauri. Due to the condition of the existing bridge, development of the area to the north between State Highway 1 and Vinegar Hill Road has been restricted. Much of this land has been zoned for residential housing but cannot be developed due to the bridge restricting suitable access.
The bridge replacement is supported by Crown funding through the Infrastructure Acceleration Fund (IAF) as part of the Springs Flat Roundabout project.
