Our pensioner housing villages provide safe, affordable and age-friendly units and bedsits for independently living retirees.

You can apply for pensioner housing by completing the application forms on this page.

Our units

Our units are:

  • well-kept and usually located on flat sites near shops and transport services
  • fitted with security doors and smoke alarms
  • insulated
  • either one bedroom, two bedroom or bedsit.

Most are easily accessible with ramps, handrails and wet showers. Furnishings and whiteware are the responsibility of the tenants.

Building insurance and rates are paid by Council.

Rent a unit

Step 1.Check you meet the eligibility criteria

You must be:

  • aged 65+ and retired from full time work
  • a New Zealand citizen or be permitted to reside in New Zealand
  • have limited financial assets - $40,000 single or $60,000 couple (excludes car, furniture and personal effects)
  • able to live independently.

Step 2.Complete the application forms

Both forms must be completed. You will need to ask your doctor to complete the Pensioner Housing Doctor’s Consent form.

You can fill the forms out on your computer and save them, or you can print them at any of our local libraries.

Step 3.Provide supporting documentation

You will need to supply documentation that shows you:

  • can live independently within a communal housing environment, e.g. Pensioner Housing Doctor’s Consent form
  • have a good tenant history or can provide referees who can comment on your suitability
  • have a good credit rating
  • have a clean criminal record.

Step 4.Submit your application

Send your completed application form and the relevant documents to Whangārei Agricultural and Pastoral Society using the post or email details on the form.

If your application meets all the requirements, you will be invited to a face-to-face meeting.

If you are successful, you will be placed on our register.

Applicants are prioritised based on housing need and other criteria.

We have villages all over the district for older adults to live and age in their communities. Each village consists of a small number of units. Most villages have off street parking and some green space.

Rent and bond

Rent is a fixed cost of the current superannuation payment:

  • single and two bedroom units are 30% of your weekly superannuation
  • bedsits are 28% of your weekly superannuation
  • bond is set at four weeks rent and two weeks rent in advance, due at the start of your tenancy
  • tenants deal directly with our friendly Tenancy Managers - Whangārei Agricultural and Pastoral Society.

We have dedicated contractors who will do any necessary repairs and maintenance. Water, lawns, gutter cleaning and exterior cleaning is included in your rent.
