Scary movie fans, come along and watch a 1922 silent horror movie masterpiece at the library.
Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror is a silent German expressionist film loosely based on the horror novel Dracula by Bram Stoker. The film takes place in the early 19th century. It is about a vampire, Count Orlok from Transylvania who preys on a real estate agent’s wife and imposes a reign of terror on a small town.
Nosferatu is notable for its unique and, at times, unsettling imagery and chilling performance from Max Schreck as the vampire which set the template for horror films that followed.
It also has a legendary backstory. Max Schreck, is a pseudonym that means 'maximum terror' in German and he was rumoured to have been another actor in disguise. He was also rumoured to have been a real vampire.
Bram Stoker’s family sued the film studio that produced Nosferatu for copyright infringement because of its similarities to the novel Dracula. As a result, almost all copies of the film Nosferatu were destroyed. It is a miracle the film survived at all.
Nosferatu is also available on Beamafilm, our movie streaming service.
This film is rated M: suitable for mature audiences, 16 years and over.
