Don’t judge a book by its cover!

Check out our unique selection of human books instead!.

We all have our stories and many of us have experienced prejudice and discrimination because of our differences.

The human-library concept is about hearing some of these stories and asking your own questions in order to ‘unjudge’.

There will be some child-appropriate human books, so bring the whānau and explore some stories.

Free entry

No need to book, just come along and borrow a human.

About the Human Library

The Human Library, is a library of people where you spend time with a person instead of a book. You listen to their story for about 5 to 10 minutes and ask questions. Then move on to another human book.

The goal is to fight prejudice. Each person has a title which is a prejudice they have faced - 'unemployed', 'refugee', 'bipolar', 'single parent', 'polyamorous', etc. By listening to their story, listeners learn to 'not judge a book by its cover'.

This international project originated in Denmark in 2000 aimed at creating a safe space for dialogue where topics are discussed openly for individuals to challenge the stereotypes and prejudices they may have.
