Nove-L (Northern Virtual e-Library) is a collaborative venture between several public libraries in the upper North Island of New Zealand, using OverDrive.

Through Nove-L website and Libby app you can download eBooks, eAudiobooks, eMagazines for free, onto your computer and mobile devices to read or listen to anywhere at anytime.

Titles include fiction and non-fiction for adults, teens and children.

What's needed

  • Membership of Whangarei District Libraries with a valid library card number and PIN.

If you are having problems logging into Libby or Nove-l by OverDrive, your membership details may need updating and your library card reactivated. Please contact us by:

  • Internet access.
  • A compatible device with the Libby software or app for downloading and reading eBooks and eMagazines or listening to eAudiobooks or watching videos.

Please note: Amazon Kindle eReaders are generally not a compatible device for reading library eBooks in New Zealand.

  • Adobe Digital Edition Software an Adobe ID to authorise your devices for reading eBooks with DRM copyright protection.

Magazines

OverDrive/Nove-L website

On the OverDrive/Nove-L website, sign in with your library card number and PIN.

Click the Subjects tab then the Magazines tab.

Or search for the magazine title.

To find magazines:

Tap Explore > What's New > New in Magazines.

Or search the magazine title.

You can also search, preview and borrow OverDrive eBooks and eAudiobooks through the library catalogue.

Whangarei District Libraries catalogue

To search for eBooks or eAudiobooks select Digital Library from the drop-down menu next to the Home icon.

Libby items are identified under Electronic Format by:

  • eBooks as: LIBBY EBOOK
  • eAudiobooks as: LIBBY AUDOIBOOK

To view a sample of an eBook or listen to a sample of an eAudiobook, click the Preview button then follow the on-screen directions.

Downloading items

For eBooks

Downloading eBooks from the library catalogue is for use with Adobe Digital Editions and transfer to an eReader.

On clicking Download, a window will open with Check Out options:

  • Read now in browser
  • PDF ebook
  • Open PDF ebook

Select your preferred option. The item will download to your computer, then transfer it to your eReader.

If you are using the Libby app, you borrow the eBook when you click Download. It will appear in your BookShelf from where you download it, then open to read.

For eAudiobooks

On clicking Download, window will open with a button for 'Listen now in browser'.

If you are using the Libby app, you borrow the eAudiobook when you click Download. It will appear in your BookShelf from where you download it, then open and listen. 

Lending conditions

Check Outs

6 eBook and eAudiobook titles can be checked out at the same time.

Holds

Only 6 eBook and eAudiobook titles can be placed on hold at the same time.

Lending periods

There is a choice of lending periods for eBooks and eAudiobooks: 7, 14 or 21 days.

Renewals

The option to renew a title becomes available three days before the title is set to expire (if there are no holds on it), appearing next to the title on your Bookshelf under your library account.

You can only use the renew feature once for each checkout.

Return items early

eBooks and eAudiobooks can be returned early using the app on your device.

eMagazines

There are no checkout limits on eMagazines, so you can borrow as many as you like. They also do not affect the limits of the total number of items you have checked out at any one time.

They are also continuously available with up to 3 years of back issues on some eMagazine titles.
